The Adidas Hyperboost Edge is a new max cushioned super trainer designed for comfort and bounce over long miles. Priced at $200, it competes with the ASICS Superblast 3 ($210) and Nike Vomero Plus ($180). The Hyperboost Edge is Adidas’ first real entry into the max cushion, performance running shoe market. It has a unique construction using only a single foam—45mm of an expanded PEBA in the heel with no stiffening or stabilizing elements and a very thin outsole. The upper is a little stiff with a futuristic, basketball shoe feel and a rigid heel counter with small pillows of foam around the Achilles. Out on the run it reminded us of a lighter Vomero Plus with a more moderate drop and possibly even more cushioning and protection in the forefoot. The foam was softer and more relaxed and easy to run in than we expected at recovery paces, but we also found it to be fun and bouncy with a nice squish and release sensation when picking up the pace. Adidas appears to have delivered exactly what it was missing in its line-up: a soft, bouncy max stack cruiser that is very comfortable and pleasant to run in for high mileage runners needing a recovery shoe that also feels fun and peppy when you want to run faster daily paces.
