The Nike Alphafly 4 is a race shoe designed for speed over distance. Priced at $280, it’s the middle option in Nike’s marathon lineup and goes up against shoes like the ASICS Metaspeed Sky Tokyo ($270) and Adidas Adios Pro 5 ($275). For this version, Nike introduced a lighter, softer foam called ZoomX LT as the top layer, two Air Zoom units produced using frequency and vibration rather than heat, and a wider carbon plate and base. The step-in feel is noticeably softer (although we still wouldn’t call it soft) and the fit is more dialed in than the Alphafly 3, while retaining a similar Atomknit upper material. Out on the run, the first thing we noticed was how loud and squeaky the Air Zoom units are. It’s not the same mechanical popping noise as the Alphafly 3. This one actually squeaks. After getting past that distraction, we found that landing on the Air Zoom units in the forefoot delivers that iconic Alphafly bounce that gets you into a good rhythm. The platform is more stable and robust than the previous version, with plenty of cushioning underfoot. The ride is also smoother than the Alphafly 3, allowing you to land anywhere on the platform and transition easily to the forefoot. This version is definitely a refinement of the previous iteration, but it’s still not a pinnacle race shoe due to its heavier weight (211 grams in our men’s US size 10.5). If you loved the Alphafly 3, you’ll definitely like the 4. And if you’re looking for a fun, stable, comfortable workout or race-day shoe and don’t mind the squeak, the Alphafly 4 is a great option.
