The Asics Metaspeed Sky Tokyo is a race shoe built for both speed and comfort. Priced at $270, it competes with top-tier options like the Adidas Adios Pro 4 ($250), Saucony Endorphin Elite 2 ($290), and the Puma Fast-R 3 ($300). The Sky Tokyo is Asics’ update to the Sky Paris. It keeps the top layer of FF Turbo+, Asics’ PEBA-based race foam, but now also features a new, softer, and lighter ATPU compound called FF Leap as the bottom layer. Like its predecessor, it maintains the carbon fiber plate positioned close to the foot. It also retains the minimalist race-day upper of the Sky Paris and maintains its narrow silhouette through the midfoot and heel. On our first run out of the box, we were pleasantly surprised by how comfortable, smooth and easy it was to run in, even at relaxed warm-up and cool-down paces. This was a very different experience from the Sky Paris, which—while fast and one of our top picks for marathon and half marathon race day—felt too aggressive and uncomfortable at slower paces. The Sky Tokyo offers good cushioning and impact absorption in the heel, with high torque and horsepower in the forefoot. It’s lightweight, comfortable, and delivers an excellent toe-off, much like the Sky Paris and Fast-R 3—exactly what you want in a marathon shoe. It felt smooth and controlled, even for easy running. It’s like an amalgamation of the best elements from the top shoes on the market: the softness of the Adios Pro 4, the snappy toe-off of the Sky Paris, and the chunky, cushioned heel of the Alphafly 3. There’s nothing particularly wild or unique about this update—but that’s actually what makes it so great.
