Below we are sharing 5 trends we are seeing in running shoes in the Summer of 2026. See how models like the Hoka Clifton Pro, Saucony Paramount Max, New Balance SC Elite v6, and Topo Specter Elite are shaping the running shoe landscape right now.

Running shoes are getting weirder, faster, and more competitive than ever. From retro-inspired designs and upgraded legacy models to every brand launching a serious race shoe, there’s a lot happening across the industry right now. And it might be the end of an era for the barefoot mafia.

Brands have recently been incorporating design elements from the early 2000s in their shoes. The Saucony Paramount Max is the clearest callback, modernizing the visual style of a classic Saucony shoe your gym teacher might have worn in middle school. Other brands such as Adidas and New Balance have made use of retro-inspired TPU overlays on the uppers of their performance shoes with models like the SC Rebel v1, SC Elite v6, and the Adidas Evo SL EXO.

New Balance is turning a new leaf with their performance running lineup after a mediocre last two years. The classic New Balance More v6 max cushion line is reportedly being cancelled, and the SC Trainer (the shoe that helped kickstart the super trainer category) has officially been replaced by the SC Rebel v1. And the SC Elite v6 is impressing us so far with its comfort, responsiveness, and speed assistance.

In 2026, we’ve seen brands introduce new versions of their legacy nameplates with upgraded midsole foams. Rather than name these shoes something different entirely (like Hoka did with the Skyflow), Hoka and Brooks are leveraging the unmatched mainstream brand equity of the Clifton and Ghost with the new Clifton Pro and Ghost Amp.

We’ve officially reached the point where every brand has figured out how to make a competitive marathon racer. Gone are the days when Nike and Adidas racers were the only real options for dedicated runners. Brands like Hoka with the Cielo X1 3.0, Brooks with the Hyperion Elite 6, and Topo with the Specter Elite, all now have excellent shoes for the marathon distance.

In 2026, we’ve seen a slight increase in the number of niche, low stack workout shoes on the market. The Metasleek was designed at the request of ASICS' elite athletes to be a direct, responsive training tool for interval-style workouts. The Puma Fast-FWD Nitro Elite 2, on the other hand, is more of a short distance racer, offering a carbon plate and a snappier, stiffer platform.
