ASICS Metaspeed Edge Tokyo

The Asics Metaspeed Edge Tokyo is a marathon race shoe designed for speed over long distances. Priced at $270, it competes with shoes like the Nike Alphafly 3 ($290), Puma Fast-R 3 ($300), and Asics' own Metaspeed Sky Tokyo. The Edge Tokyo is Asics’ update to the Edge Paris. It keeps the bottom layer of FF Turbo+, Asics’ PEBA-based race foam, but now also features a new, softer, and lighter ATPU compound called FF Leap as the top layer. Like its predecessor, it maintains the carbon fiber plate positioned lower than in the Sky. It also retains the minimalist race-day upper of the Edge Paris and maintains its narrow silhouette through the midfoot and heel. We felt like the laces caused a lot of pressure across the top of the arch and that you can’t lock your foot down exactly how you’d like—definitely not a daily trainer feel. If you’re a fan of the channel, you know we preferred the Sky Paris over the Edge Paris, but this is a big improvement over the previous version. The midsole foam isn’t too soft, despite the new, softer foam as the top layer. The FF Leap sits in the Goldilocks zone—perfectly dialed in. It doesn’t squish down too much, and it’s not unstable. On the run, we did feel there’s a lot more foam above the plate, which makes the Edge Tokyo better suited for a forefoot striker with a lighter touch. If you’re more of a midfoot or heel striker, you’ll find yourself working against all the foam up front—it doesn’t feel quite as explosively bouncy or deliver as quick of a toe-off as the Sky Tokyo. The Edge Tokyo is very lightweight and fast. There’s nothing particularly wild or unique about this update—but that’s actually what makes it so great.
