Below we are grading the Hyperion Elite 6, an all new super shoe from Brooks. Priced at $275, it goes head-to-head with the New Balance SC Elite v6, Hoka Cielo X-1 3.0 and Saucony Endorphin Elite 3.

The Hyperion Elite 6 is a massive step up for Brooks, with a highly responsive PEBA midsole, aggressive rocker, and one of the best uppers we’ve seen on a race shoe. It’s fast, comfortable, and seriously well-rounded, with the only real knock being some early outsole wear.

This is a significant upgrade from the previous generation, the Hyperion Elite 5. The rocker is aggressive, there’s 10% more foam overall, and the PEBA formulation has been tuned for added compression and rebound. Brooks has made their best race shoe yet by far.
The upper on the Hyperion Elite 6 might be the best shoe upper on the market. It has an accommodating fit and is highly-aerated.
It has a modern CPU outsole. Our pair has some visible foam wear in the lateral heel after 30 miles, so that is why we are giving it a B.
The Hyperion Elite 6 offers a soft, cushioned underfoot feel and a perfectly-dialled upper.
A clean silhouette and a beautifully-designed upper, plus a large, disruptive logo treatment conveying forward momentum, make this a very aesthetically-pleasing race shoe.

We put the Hyperion Elite 6 through the paces in our first two runs. The first run was 14 miles in total with the workout portion consisting of 8 x 1 mile repeats with jog rest in between. The second run was a 20 mile long run with some marathon pace miles.
What we found is that this latest version is a complete overhaul from the Hyperion Elite 5. The new PEBA foam is much softer and more responsive to the touch than in the previous version. While the previous version wasn’t brickish firm, it was just a stiffer shoe, which made the ride less exciting or lively. The geometry in the Hyperion Elite 6 is also more aggressive, with a more rockered heel and forefoot. Overall, the ride is very enjoyable and you get a lot of compression, but it still feels quick. It was definitely fast enough for the interval style workout and the long run workout. The improved rocker geometry is very smooth and delivers a very nice toe off experience. It is also quite stable for a race shoe because the foam does wrap up a little bit on the sidewalls and there is a decently wide base.
The only people we wouldn’t recommend this shoe to are those that don’t like soft foams or if you will be using it for a marathon where you will be going 4+ hours. We could see the foam just feeling too soft and squishy after that amount of time on feet.
If you are looking for a soft race shoe with some good balance and a nice lively experience underfoot and a beautiful rocker, the Hyperion Elite 6 is going to be a great option. If you want a firmer feel underfoot or are going to be on your feet for 4+ hours, the New Balance SC Elite v6 or the Topo Specter Elite may be a better option.
