The TYR Maverick-V1 Runner is a non-plated daily trainer built for speed and versatility. Priced at $150 (and often on sale for around $100), it competes with shoes like the Adidas EVO SL ($150) and ASICS Megablast ($225). It features TYR’s new supercritical foam, called FLIGHTTIME. Our pair weighed in 15 grams lighter than the Megablast and 5 grams lighter than the EVO SL, with more foam underfoot than the EVO SL and almost as much as the Megablast. Step-in feel is probably its weakest point—the insole is thin and workmanlike, and the upper material feels scratchy and not very stretchy—but the toebox is roomy, and the fit is true to size. Once you start running, the shoe comes alive. The foam, toe-off, and firmness are reminiscent of the EVO SL and Megablast, while the cushion, stack, and underfoot comfort feel closer to the Aero Glide 3. It’s the best kind of do-it-all daily trainer: fun, comfortable, and bouncy, excelling as a simple, no-frills Zone 3 workhorse. Unlike the EVO SL, it’s not overly aggressive. It feels smooth at slower paces but really comes alive at faster speeds, offering a peppy, responsive ride. If you’re looking for a running shoe with the comfort of a daily trainer and the quickness of a speed shoe, the Maverick-V1 Runner is an excellent option—and at a very good price.
