Grading the Hoka Skyward X2

The Skyward X 2.0 earns an easy A with one of the most protective and comfortable rides in the max-stack category. The PEBA and supercritical EVA setup keeps that smooth, highly cushioned feel from the original Skyward X while dialing in the upper and trimming the stack slightly for a more streamlined experience. Step-in comfort remains elite, the outsole coverage inspires confidence, and the overall package feels built for high-mileage runners who want plush protection without sacrificing responsiveness.

Midsole—A

Hoka chose evolution over revolution with the Skyward X2 midsole, retaining the OG’s carbon-plated PEBA/Supercritical EVA setup, but slightly reducing the stack height. While not mindblowing, this midsole provides a smooth, comfortable, and highly-protective ride for high mileage training.

Upper—A-

In the newest iteration, a more dialed, streamlined performance upper replaces the thick, overly plush material of the previous generation.

Outsole—A

While not as grippy as the CPU compound on the Cielo X1 3.0 outsole, there is excellent rubber coverage on the Skyward X2.

Step-in Comfort—A

The Skyward X2 offers one of the most comfortable step-in feels on the market. Wide-footed runners might find the midfoot slightly narrow, but the upper in this version is much lighter and more breathable, making it feel less suffocating.

Design

The Skyward X2 is a well-designed shoe that delivers subtle aesthetic improvements over the OG. The stacked lines on the midsole give us old-school Bondi vibes.
