The Mount to Coast R1 is a road ultramarathon shoe, built to handle both daily training and long-distance racing. At $160, the R1 compares with other light-weight daily trainers like the Salomon AeroGlide 3 ($160), Mizuno Neo Zen ($150), and ASICS Novablast 5 ($140). But it can also be compared to shoes that offer more protection and comfort with a much higher stack height, like the Puma MagMax ($180) or Speedland RX:FPY ($300). In the Supwell lab, our pair in a men’s size 10.5 weighed in at 256 grams, with 34mm of LightCELL foam in the heel. While not a super-tall shoe by today’s standards, the supercritical PEBA blend—paired with their ZeroSag technology built into the midsole—provides a nice, smooth bounce and helps to dampen the bottoming-out sensation that we typically associate with similarly stacked shoes, like the New Balance Rebel v4. The R1 comes with elements geared toward ultra-training, like a roomy forefoot and elastic, Salomon-esque toggle laces, ostensibly to relieve pressure when your feet swell over long distances. However, the R1 is also a great pick-up for those looking for a new, fun daily trainer. The R1 has one of the best training foams (think classic Lightstrike Pro) we’ve tried recently, and overall provides a really comfortable, durable, and distraction-free experience on foot.
