The Nike Pegasus 42 is an entry-level training shoe designed for versatility and durability. Priced at $145, it competes with shoes like the Hoka Mach 7 ($145) and Adidas Evo SL ($150). Several significant changes were made to the Pegasus in this version. While the foam, stack height and drop remain the same, the upper and toebox is more accommodating, the Air Zoom unit runs the full length of the shoe, and there is more foam in the front of the forefoot in this new iteration. Unfortunately, these changes did not lighten the shoe; in fact, it is slightly heavier than the previous version, making it significantly heavier than its competitors. However, the step-in feel is very nice and the upper is very comfortable and accommodating. Out on the run we were pleasantly surprised by the ride after not liking the previous version. The foam is still on the firm side, but the full-length Air Zoom unit and additional foam in the forefoot give it a much more cushioned, smooth ride, and while not exactly peppy, the toe off is very pleasant. While the Pegasus 42 is not ideal for high mileage training, fast workouts, or long runs, it is a very solid and versatile trainer for someone looking for a durable shoe to handle runs up to an hour, walking, and casual use.
