The Topo Specter 3 is a new super trainer designed for speed and bounce. Priced at $170, it competes with shoes like the ASICS Megablast ($225) and Adidas Evo SL ($150). The big update to the Specter 3 is the use of Topo’s new ATPU based Rev Foam. The previous version featured a PEBA compound that we found to be too firm for our liking. The Specter 3 also went up in stack height to 41mm in the heel, while also dropping weight to around 240 grams in our Men’s size 10.5. The upper is very breathable and lightweight but it also has a plush and comfortable tongue. Like all of Topo’s shoes, it has a very wide, anatomical toe box that we found to be almost too roomy, and a more snug and dialed midfoot and heel. Out on the run we were surprised by the bounce and responsiveness of the new foam and the aggressive geometry that really wanted us to get up onto the forefoot. While not uncomfortable for relaxed or recovery miles, we anticipate that the Specter 3 will best be suited for more uptempo daily runs and workouts—a Zone 3 champ. While the Specter 3 is not as versatile as some of the other super trainers on the market, we think it will be a great option for runners who like to have a speedier daily option and a great shoe for workouts.
