1. New Balance More V5: Daily Comfort
The More v5 is an excellent shoe for one very specific and important purpose—stacking relaxed mileage in supreme comfort. There are faster and more exciting max cushion options on the market, but very few that soak up recovery work like the More v5. It’s also a great shoe for walking.

2. Saucony Endorphin Speed 4: Speed Training
We can’t sugarcoat it—we did not like the Speed 4. However, it’s a popular shoe that sold like hotcakes. We’re holding out hope that the upcoming Speed 5 returns to soft, bouncy fun. But if were a fan of the Speed 4, or want to take a chance on a new speed shoe, $112 is a pretty dang good deal.
3. ASICS Gel-Nimbus 27: Long Runs
The Nimbus 27 is the latest version of a classic comfort shoe. It’s big and it’s cushioned, but it’s also surprisingly bouncy and versatile. We tested it on a 20 mile long run and this felt protective, smooth and oddly capable of picking up the pace. This is a sleeper pick for a long run shoe, especially if you want comfort rather than speed.

4. New Balance SC Elite V4: Race Day
The SC Elite v4 is a mattress of a shoe. It’s comfortable, stable and protective, but feels more like a cruiser than an aggressive weapon. We didn’t recommend this at MSRP with so many great race day shoes at $250, but at $180 this is excellent value for a long run or 4 hour marathon shoe.
