Our Thoughts on the On Lightspray Cloudmonster 3 Hyper After 100 Miles
The On Lightspray Cloudmonster 3 Hyper is arguably the most innovative daily trainer to hit the market in a long time. The unique Lightspray upper, Helion race foam construction with the smooth rocker geometry feels perfect for daily miles and long runs. There’s a noticeable weight difference between it and most of the daily trainers on the market, especially given the stack height. Here we will provide an overview of the Lightspray Cloudmonster 3 Hyper and let you know our thoughts on the ride, comfort, performance, and durability after 100 miles, as well as provide some thoughts on who should try this shoe.
After 100 miles, the On Lightspray Cloudmonster 3 Hyper still feels like one of the most unique super trainers on the market. The Lightspray upper disappears on foot with an insanely lightweight feel, while the Helion HF forefoot gives the shoe a smooth and efficient toe-off that keeps easy runs from feeling dull. It’s not the softest or most explosive shoe in the category, but the combination of stability, geometry, and lightweight ride makes it incredibly easy to rack up miles in without beating up the legs.

What Makes the On Lightspray Cloudmonster 3 Hyper So Good
The Upper
This update features On’s LightSpray upper, applied by a robot in just three minutes. With the new upper you get significant weight savings while adding 4mm of stack. On also made the Lightspray upper very easy to get on, especially compared to the Lightspray Cloudboom Strike, making it even quicker and easier to get on than a standard lace-up shoe. Once it is on, you don't have to worry about lace bite or getting the lock-down perfect, it just fits like a Cinderella slipper.
The Light Weight
The Lightspray model drops about 50–55 grams compared to the traditional Cloudmonster 3 Hyper, making it the same weight as many of the popular race shoes on the market, like the SC Elite v5 and the Alphafly 3. The weight drop compared to the standard version is noticeable underfoot, and the ride stays smooth, stable, and consistently enjoyable from start to finish.
The Foam
The LightSpray Cloudmonster 3 Hyper brings a surprisingly fun blend of cushion, response, and protection thanks to the PEBA foam, CloudTec platform, and supportive EVA frame. The Helion HF foam has a subtle bounce and comfortable underfoot feel. It provides plenty of stability and support. The EVA carrier and outsole makes the shoe very durable and after 100 miles we are seeing very little visible wear.
The Geometry
In both the standard version and the lightspray version, the rocker is incredibly smooth and natural. It doesn't force you to heel strike or get up onto your toes. It just rolls you forward from wherever you land and makes it easy to turn your legs over.
Things to Consider Before Buying the On Lightspray Cloudmonster 3 Hyper
The Fit
The lightspray upper will not work for everyone. If you have a very narrow foot or a particularly wide foot, the one size fits all nature of the lightspray upper doesn't allow for any dialing in of the fit or the option to get a better lockdown. You also need to be careful that the somewhat sharp edges of the lightspray material can dig into the front of your ankle or your Achilles. On has attempted to provide a solution to this issue by providing a pair of free socks with the shoes that are tall enough to protect your lower leg. They are also of very high quality, so they help keep your foot in place within the shoe.
The Price
At $280, the price is quite steep for a daily trainer or a max cushion super trainer. We personally wouldn't use it for workouts or racing. We find its best qualities are protection and a smooth, cushioned ride. But, if you are looking for a fun, lightweight innovative daily trainer, we think it is worth the price.
