The Hoka Gaviota 5 is a max cushioned stability shoe. Priced at $175, it competes with shoes like the Asics Gel-Kayano 32 ($165) and Saucony Hurricane ($170). It has a performance mesh upper, a nicely padded tongue and heel, and a surprisingly wide and accommodating toe box that is reminiscent of the Topo or Altra shoes. You get a wide base, a firmer foam that wraps up the sides, and what Hoka calls an H-plate, for additional stability. We were pleasantly surprised on the run to find that the lower drop, nice rocker, overall comfortable fit and feel, and good geometry make it super easy to run. It also delivers a very smooth ride with good protection. It reminds us of a Saucony Endorphin Shift 3 with a wider toe box. The only thing to watch out for is that this type of foam has traditionally not stood up well in terms of durability and typically gives out after 100-150 miles, but we haven’t tested it for that distance. If you are looking for a comfortable walking and basic running shoe that is not too soft or too firm, and provides a reliable and stable ride, the Gaviota 5 is a great option.
