Grading the Hoka Cielo X1 3.0

This is Hoka finally putting it all together with a midsole that brings elite bounce, protection, and real speed assistance all in one package. The upper isn’t best-in-class but it holds its own, while the CPU outsole delivers reliable grip right where it matters. The fit runs narrow but still brings solid step-in comfort, and overall this feels like one of the most complete race-day options Hoka has dropped yet.

Midsole—A+

The midsole of the Hoka Cielo X1 3.0 is absolute fire. It has the wild bounce and protection of the OG Cielo X1, with the speed assistance that the Cielo X1 2.0 never was able to achieve. Hoka now has one of the best race midsoles on the market with this PEBA-based foam.

Upper—B

The upper of the Cielo X1 3.0 is not as excellent as the best uppers in the game, but it gets the job done. It is lightweight, provides a good lockdown, and doesn't feel baggy or scratchy. The tongue is excessively long, so you might want to wear crew length socks so the tongue doesn't cut up the front of your ankle.

Outsole—A

It has a solid CPU outsole with ample coverage on the mid-forefoot landing zone. We don't see any issues with grip.

Step-in Comfort—A-

This version has a more narrow, streamlined fit, but it provides excellent comfort with plenty of protection and bounce underfoot.

Design—B

While not as flashy and fast-looking as something like the Li-Ning Feidian 6 Elite or the ASICS Metaspeed Sky Tokyo, It is a solid-looking racer, especially in this new Alabaster / Yellow Gold Colorway.
