Grading the R.A.D Synth
The Synth is R.A.D’s second performance running shoe. The UFO is a Hobby Jogger favorite, so we were curious to see if the Synth could live up to the hype of the UFO. Below we are breaking down the midsole, upper, outsole, design, and step-in comfort of the R.A.D Synth to help you decide whether you should add it to your running shoe rotation.
The Synth comes in hot with an A– midsole, an A upper, and an A outsole, rounding things out with a B+ in step-in comfort and an A+ for design. The overall grade lands at a clean A, backed by a peppy, no-nonsense ride and a surprisingly intentional build for a $140 daily trainer. With strong rubber coverage, a secure fit, and that signature R.A.D feel, this one easily earns its Supwell Certified Banger rating.
Midsole—A-
The midsole of the R.A.D Synth perfectly executes what it sets out to do, providing a no-nonsense, peppy ride that feels like a blast from the past in the best possible way. The TPEE/Bio Eva foam lies on the firmer side of the Goldilocks zone and is definitely firmer than the foam PEBA foam found in the UFO, but is is responsive and provides great protection and a nimble feel. As a distraction-free, streamlined workhorse for stacking mileage, the Synth offers excellent value at $140.
Upper—A
The Synth has a more svelte fit with a less plush upper, tongue, and laces than the UFO, but that’s to be expected in a $140 daily trainer. The upper is also much better than that found in the Adidas Evo SL.
Outsole—A
There is a commendable amount of rubber coverage on the outsole with a zigzag motif pattern that provides great traction (and is a nice design touch).

Step-in Comfort—B+
The Synth has a dialed, considered fit with a pleasant step-in feel. Runners with wide feet might find it too narrow, but overall the materials are very nice and it is easy to get a good lock-down.
Design—A+
R.A.D. imbues intentionality into every aspect of their products. It’s refreshing to see such attention-to-detail in an entry-level trainer.
