Our Thoughts on the Nike Vomero Premium After 100 Miles

The Vomero Premium is the pinnacle shoe in Nike’s Vomero line. It has the most stack, the most cushioning, and the most tech of any of Nike’s performance running shoes. We’ve enjoyed it for its elite level protection and fun, unique ride and we have now gotten it up to 100 miles. Below, we break down five reasons why the Vomero Premium is such a sought after shoe among hobby joggers—and let you know how it’s held up after 100 miles of use.

What We've Liked About the Vomero Premium

The Protection

The Nike Vomero Premium is a feat of running shoe engineering. The reason it feels so unique is because you’re getting a 55mm stack of ZoomX foam—the highest ever without a plate. Instead of rigidity, the air pods act as a stabilizing agent that doesn’t feel stiff. Nike found a way to control a massive stack of soft foam without killing the sensation. It’s genius engineering and the execution is spot on. It does a great job of protecting your legs, relieving the burden of  high mileage training on your body, and giving you the sensation of running on an anti-gravity treadmill. There is nothing like it on the market in terms of cushioning and protection.

The Ride

There is no denying that this is a fun shoe to run in. It provides a unique experience and is very enjoyable, especially if you are a bigger runner and putting a lot of force down into it even at slower paces, or if you are a forefoot striker and tend to land right up at the front, activating the air pod in the forefoot. It is also really nice when you lock into a rhythm with it, which also makes it a great treadmill shoe.

The Comfort

The step-in feel is fantastic. You get a plush upper with plenty of padding in the tongue and the heel. If you have to stand on your feet all day, that would be an awesome shoe to help relieve the burden of a lot of standing or walking.

The Stability

Even with 55mm of foam in the heel, the Vomero Premium is surprisingly stable. The air pods do a really nice job of stabilizing the foam. It also has a wide base and plastic heel cup that holds your foot nicely in place.

The Durability

At 100 miles there is little to no signs of wear on the outsole and the foam feels just as lively as the first day out of the box. In fact, the foam may feel even a little better as we’ve broken it in and put some miles on it.

Some Concerns We Have About the Vomero Premium

The Performance

This is a type of max stack shoe that does not successfully evade the trade-offs of such a tall stack of foam like some of its competitors. For example, the Mizuno Neo Vista 2, Puma MagMax, and the ASICS Gel-Nimbus 27 weigh less, are more streamlined, and provide just as much protection at a lower price point. The weight of the shoe is definitely noticeable, especially when your legs are tired or you are trying to get up a hill; but, we can’t deny that it looks fire and it’s packed with fresh tech.

The Value

If you are looking for a running shoe that is versatile and performs well for different types of runs and you care about saving money, this is likely not the shoe for you. The crazy high stack of foam and the extra protection just aren’t worth the clear and obvious trade-offs of the feeling of the extra weight on the run, especially at $230.
