The Puma MagMax 2 is a max cushioned training shoe designed for high mileage training. Priced at $180, it competes with shoes like the Nike Vomero Plus ($180) and Asics Gel-Nimbus 27 ($165). The OG MagMax was a Hobby Jogger favorite and stood out as a protective, stable, and bouncy long run shoe that allowed you to clip off the miles with comfort and ease. The second version didn’t stray far off the original. While Puma did manage to shave off about 30 grams of weight in our Men’s size 10.5, the foam itself feels very similar to the original. The step-in feel is quite similar to the first version, although the toebox feels roomy and less dialed with a pretty thin tongue. Out on the run, the foam felt equally as firm as the first version even though the expectation is that it would be softer. Like the original, it may take some miles to break in, but it will no doubt be an extremely protective and durable shoe for high mileage training with excellent outsole grip. If you liked the original MagMax you will not be unhappy with the minor changes Puma made with V2, but if you didn’t like V1 and were hoping for a softer foam in V2, this shoe is not likely to be the one for you.
