ASICS Sonicblast 2 Overview & First Run Review

Will the ASICS Sonicblast 2 be the update the Sonicblast needed? The Sonicblast 2 gets a redesigned forked plate that allows more FF Turbo² foam to extend through the midsole, creating a more pronounced forefoot trampoline feel. It keeps the same 46mm stack and 8mm drop while dropping 14 grams from the original, but comes with a $30 price increase.

Comparing the Original Sonicblast to the Sonicblast 2

The Brief

The original Sonicblast launched at the same time as the Megablast, which was such a beloved shoe that the original Sonicblast probably didn't get the attention it deserved. The first iteration of the Sonicblast was marketed as a dual-foam, plated trainer designed to deliver comfort and versatility for high mileage training. It received mixed reviews from journalists and hobby joggers alike. The new Sonicblast 2 features a redesigned forked plate, which allows for more FF Turbo² race foam to extend through the midsole. This creates a more prominent forefoot trampoline pod.

The Midsole

Both the v1 and v2 of the Sonicblast feature FF Turbo² on top, a carbon-infused nylon plate in the middle and a layer of FF Turbo Max on the bottom. FF Turbo2 is the same responsive ATPU foam that is found in the beloved Megablast, while FF Turbo Max is a more stable Olefin-based foam that helps with stability and durability. The new design and forked PEBAX plate allow for more of the ATPU foam in the new version.

The Specs

The Sonicblast 2 retains the same 46mm in the heel and 8mm drop that was found in the original version, but ASICS was able to drop the weight (maybe because of the higher ratio of lighter ATPU foam) in the second version. The Sonicblast 2 comes in at 242 grams in a Men's US size 9, while the v1 weighed 256 grams in the same size.

The Price

All the new technology and increased amount of race foam have led to a $30 price increase in the Sonicblast 2 over the v1. The Sonicblast 2 will retail for $190. While we don't love a price increase, this is in-line with many of the other super trainers on the market, including the newly released New Balance SC Rebel v1 and Mizuno Neo Vista 3, which both retail for $200.
