Below we are sharing a guide for the best use case for each of the popular race day shoes on the market. We will help you decide whether shoes like the Puma Fast-R 3, Li-Ning Feidian 6 Elite, Hoka Cielo X1 3.0, Topo Specter Elite, ASICS Metaspeed Ray, On Cloudboom Strike 2, and more are best used for race day, training and racing, or should be reserved for training only.

Not every super shoe deserves the same role. Some are absolute speed weapons that we’d only break out on race day, others can handle both key workouts and racing, and a few shine brightest as high-end training shoes. We’ve tested enough carbon-plated shoes to know that the “best” option often comes down to how you actually use it.

The shoes that we'd reserve for race day are what we consider to be "demon time" shoes. They are the ultimate speed weapons and the shoes we reach for when we are going for a huge PR. They are lightweight and have stripped back constructions that are designed to disappear on-foot, such as the Mizuno Hyperwarp Pure. They often have aggressive geometries with propulsive rockers that reward a bounding stride and strong running form, like we see with the Puma Fast-R 3. Often, they are low to the ground with very direct midsoles that optimize for speed assistance over impact absorption. A perfect example of this is the Nike Streakfly 2. Another comparable shoe is the new Puma Fast-FWD Nitro Elite 2.

The race shoes that feel comfortable enough for training, but fast enough for racing, are some of our favorites. They often feature bouncy foams with ample stack underfoot, delivering added protection and comfort. Some good examples are the Hoka Cielo X1 3.0, which is currently our favorite race shoe of 2026, the Topo Specter Elite, which was another great surprise this year, the incredibly fun and bouncy Saucony Endorphin Elite 3, and the soft and bouncy Li-Ning Feidian 6 Elite. The shoes in this category are capable of crushing marathon PRs, but they are also approachable and forgiving enough to train in. They are often some of our favorites for long runs with pace pickups. While a little more workmanlike than the soft and bouncy shoes we just mentioned, the ASICS Metaspeed Ray and Metaspeed Sky Tokyo, the Puma Deviate Nitro Elite 4, and the New Balance SC Elite v6 are all great training and racing shoes.

The shoes in this category are marketed as race day shoes, but we don't find them to offer the speed assistance and energy return that we expect for a race shoe in 2026. These shoes often feature overly mushy foams that don't rebound as quickly as we'd like in a race shoe, which is what we experienced with the Diadora Gara Carbon 3 and the On Cloudboom Strike 2. They also have more standard geometries that don't encourage a fast transition through the stride. As we experienced with the Salomon S/Lab Phantasm 3, they lack pop and responsiveness in the forefoot, but are comfortable for daily paces and easy long runs.
