The Hoka Mach X 3 is a plastic-plated training shoe designed for speed, versatility and long run capability. Priced at $190, it competes with shoes like the ASICS Superblast 2 ($200) and Brooks Hyperion Max 3 ($200). The Mach X 3 was designed to address the upper issues that plagued the X 2. It features the same dual-foam set-up with a top layer of PEBA, a plastic plate, and a firmer layer of EVA on the bottom. The fit and step-in feel is a big improvement over the prior version—there is a lot more padding in the tongue and heel and the Hoka elf heel minimizes the chance of any heel rubbing issues. The toebox also feels wider and more voluminous, more reminiscent of a daily training upper—inviting, comfortable and pleasant—while retaining the spirit of the X 2. On the run we experienced the same reliable ride as in the X 2—a high stack of cushion, a smooth rocker geometry, a goldilocks zone foam, and a lively top layer of PEBA when you put some power down. It’s not the most exciting shoe compared to some of the new releases, but it is definitely pleasant and enjoyable to run in with a reliable and consistent feel with good stability. The Mach X 3 is definitely a solid shoe that we can confidently recommend since it is tried and true with some added comfort in the latest version, but if you want something more aggressive, try the Brooks Hyperion Max 3; if you want something that leans heavily into soft cushion, check out the Mizuno Neo Vista 2; and if you want something that has crazy bounce and a more exciting, innovative foam, get the ASICS Megablast.
