The Adios Pro 5 and Alphafly 4 signal a shift in the way brands are approaching their mainstream race shoe models. Both shoes are designed to work for the broadest market possible while still offering top-tier speed assistance. The Adios Pro 5 in particular feels like it was engineered for all paces and footstrikes. Rather than positioning the standard Adios Pro and Alphafly as halo products, Nike and Adidas are now carving out a new hyper shoe category that sits at the pinnacle of their lineup.

#2 The Rise of the Hyper Shoe
The prioritization of stability, comfort and support in the $250-$280 race shoe category is giving brands the green light to produce innovative pinnacle products that forego typical design constraints in favor of sub 100 gram constructions and soft, compressive midsoles. These shoes sacrifice durability, stability, and affordability for peak performance. Some examples are the Adidas Adizero Pro Evo 3, the yet to be launched Nike Alphafly Apex, and the Mizuno Hyperwarp 96.

#3 The Recovery Shoe Revival
Many saw the rumor of New Balance canceling the iconic “More” line after the More v6 as a sign of the recovery shoe category’s decline. This month, however, we’ve seen renewed interest in plush, soft, max cushioned shoes designed to take the burden off the legs. The ASICS Gel-Slowcush and the Mizuno Sky Prime harken back to classic max cushion shoes that dominated the hype cycle back in 2024.

#4 Stagnant Tech in Legacy Training Shoes
In the elevated training shoe category, we’re seeing brands holding on to tech that no longer feels relevant in 2026. For example, the Saucony Endorphin Speed 6 is the latest plastic plated training shoe that fails to capture the magic of its predecessors; Saucony’s beaded PEBA doesn’t feel like the competitive race foam it once did. The Nike Pegasus Plus 2 is another prime example; while it delivers a solid, robust ride for stacking mileage, we aren’t convinced that Air Zoom is the best technology for this type of shoe.

#5 Everyone is Entering the Super Shoe Market
Challenger brands continue to drop new super shoes with ATPU midsoles and lightweight constructions. Tyr’s Valkyrie Elite 2 and Topo’s Specter Elite have already gained traction in the enthusiast community. It remains to be seen if Skechers, with the Aero Elite, Altra, with the Vanish Carbon 3, and Reebok, with the Speedshifter, can see similar success.
