Here is the updated Speed Trainer Power Rankings for October. This month, the ASICS Megablast claims another Power Rankings throne, the Adidas Boston 13 holds strong as the best traditional speed trainer, the Brooks Hyperion Max 3 represents for the Max Cushion Gang, the Skechers Aero Tempo says Bye Bye Bye to brand snobby haters and the legendary Saucony Endorphin Speed 5 hangs on to round out the top 5. "Where is the EVO SL???"—not on this list. Check back soon for the Zone 3 Champs roundup. The August Speed Trainer Power Rankings List was: Adidas Boston 13, Hoka Mach X2, Saucony Endorphin Speed 5, Salomon Aero Blaze 3, and Skechers Aero Tempo.
The Megablast is not only an excellent daily trainer; it’s the most capable speed training shoe on the market. While pricey at $225, it’s capable of handling any type of session you throw at it, and can also pinch hit as a long run or marathon shoe. If you’re looking for a do-it-all shoe with serious speed chops, this is it. We enjoyed this shoe so much that we got it up to 100 miles in the first week. Check out our 100 Mile Review of the Megablast to learn more about how we used it in high mileage marathon training.
A good speed training shoe needs to be light, nimble and direct. The Boston 13 checks all three of those boxes—it’s not the flashiest, bounciest or most exciting, but it allows the runner to focus on strong speed mechanics with minimal distractions. It’s the perfect blend of modern and traditional: race foam and rods for assisted pop, and a lower profile for more proprioception.
The Hyperion Max 3 is the best plastic plated shoe of the year. It’s protective, bouncy and fun, equally as capable at track-style intervals as long, grinding tempo runs. Released a month before the Megablast, this is a shoe of the year contender that’s still featuring heavily in hobby jogger rotations across the nation. Get this if you want a max stack tank that crushes both mileage and pace.
The Skechers Aero Tempo is NSYNC-era Justin Timberlake; it’s legit, but people aren’t taking it seriously because of the brand. The Hyperburst foam is energetic and appropriately firm, paired with one of the best rocker geometries in the game. Skechers might not be bringing sexy back, but they’re saying Bye Bye Bye to accusations of being the official shoe for octogenarians.
The Speed 5 is no longer the most exciting player in the game, but it’s officially reached legend status in 2025. With the same PWRRUN PB and plastic plate formula as the previous four generations, it continues to be a reliable and steady companion for first-time marathoners, carbonphobes and Nick Bare acolytes.
