Grading the Mount to Coast C1

Built for road ultras, the C1 brings a unique ride with a PEBA top layer for bounce and a stable EVA base underneath. We loved the accommodating upper, durable outsole, and clean minimalist design, but the firmer heel feel and dual-zone lacing kept it from A+ status for us. If comfort, durability, and stability are priorities, this might be one of the more underrated long-run options out there.

Midsole—B

Designed for road ultramarathons, the C1 midsole features a top layer of bouncy PEBA foam and a thick bottom layer of EVA for stability. While the ride is smooth and comfortable, the tall stack of EVA in the heel detracts from the overall experience.

Upper—A -

This shoe has a wide, accommodating, and well-constructed upper. We’re just not fully sold on the unique dual-zone lacing system.

Outsole—A

The C1 features a rubberized EVA outsole with excellent coverage from heel to toe.

Step-in Comfort—B

The C1 has nice step-in comfort, but the bottom layer of EVA is overly firm for our preferences.

Design—A

It is a beautifully-designed shoe with a minimalist, functional design aesthetic. The C1 carries a subdued sensibility from its color palette to the Helvetica logotype on the upper.

Consider Buying the C1 if:

• You’re a road ultramarathoner looking for a dependable, smooth training shoe for long time-on-feet.
• Super trainers like the Superblast 3 and Hyperboost Edge are too soft and bouncy for your preference, and you’re looking for a stable, firm, and highly-cushioned daily trainer.

Skip the C1 if:

• You’re expecting a ride on-par with the best super trainers on the market. The C1 rides more like a standard max cushion daily trainer, possessing neither the speed capability of shoes like the Megablast and Dynafish Xiaonian, nor the fun/bounce of the Red Hare 9 Ultra or Vomero Premium.
